BESS Condensation in Humid Climates: A Commissioning Blind Spot

A sealed outdoor battery cabinet can still develop moisture inside. BESS condensation control is therefore a different procurement question from protection against rain or dust. For humid-climate projects, the commissioning plan should address cold internal surfaces, humid air admitted during service, shutdown conditions and the route by which collected water leaves the enclosure.

The buyer does not need a generic promise that the cabinet is “weatherproof.” The useful deliverable is an operating and maintenance procedure that explains when condensation can occur, how the selected configuration manages it, and what evidence supports those statements. This is particularly relevant to Southeast Asian projects where the service team may open equipment in very different conditions from those used for factory testing.

Use dew point to describe the risk

Relative humidity alone does not identify which surface will become wet. Compare the air’s dew point with the temperature of the exposed surface. A cooled component may be at risk even when the cabinet’s average air temperature looks acceptable. Sensor location is therefore part of the assessment, not a detail to leave until installation.

Rittal’s February 2026 enclosure-moisture guidance gives the following examples. They illustrate environmental conditions; they are not readings from an HMX installation or a recommended battery temperature setting.

Published dew-point examples from Rittal, February 2026
Air temperatureAir pressureRelative humidityDew point

35°C1013 hPa80%31.03°C
25°C1013 hPa71%19.38°C

The contrast shows why “warm air” is not a sufficient safety description. A surface below the relevant dew point can collect moisture. The project team must use actual site conditions and the manufacturer’s permitted operating envelope; these examples do not justify changing a cooling setpoint without engineering approval.

An IP label does not close the condensation question

IEC 60529 defines enclosure IP classifications. Its classification should not be presented as a general guarantee against internally formed condensation. Ask which assembly was assessed, which doors and cable entries were included, and how the installed configuration preserves its documented protection.

The distinction also matters when reviewing associated power electronics. Our IP21 versus IP65 inverter guide deals with enclosure selection; a humid-site review must then examine the equipment’s thermal state and service procedure separately.

Do not improve ventilation, drainage or pressure relief by drilling an undocumented opening into a completed battery enclosure. Any modification must be designed and approved for the assembly, including its safety functions and protection requirements. A component advertised for another type of cabinet is not automatically a suitable retrofit.

Commission the transitions, not only steady operation

A cabinet may look dry during a continuous run yet behave differently after cooling stops, auxiliary power fails or a service door opens. These transitions deserve explicit consideration because the external air, internal air and component surfaces do not necessarily change temperature together.

These are proposed review items, not instructions to create moisture near energised equipment. Qualified personnel should select a safe test method with the manufacturer. Some conditions are better assessed through environmental qualification records, controlled tests and a procedure review than by reproducing an extreme environment on site.

Keep electrical-safety acceptance separate from the moisture checklist. A clean-looking cabinet does not demonstrate insulation integrity, and a moisture observation is not permission to re-energise equipment. The responsible engineer must determine the inspection, corrective action and safe release requirements.

Check the edition on damp-heat evidence

IEC 60068-2-30:2025 was published on 7 August 2025 and replaces the 2005 edition. It covers cyclic damp-heat testing involving high humidity and temperature changes, generally producing condensation. The revision includes changes to chamber requirements, conditioning and reporting.

For a new quotation, ask the supplier to identify the edition, specimen, method, severity and acceptance criteria used in any report. A test on a controller or empty enclosure is not automatically evidence for the complete BESS. An older report is not automatically worthless either: the engineer needs to assess its applicability and the differences relevant to the purchase specification.

The standard’s existence does not make that particular test mandatory for every battery project, and this article does not claim that any HMX model has passed it. Required qualification depends on the contractual specification, equipment scope and applicable jurisdiction. Full procedures must come from the authorised standard and the competent testing body, not an abbreviated blog summary.

Write a service procedure that survives a rainy season

When selecting commercial and industrial energy storage, include seal inspection, condensate-path checks, alarm handling and permitted service conditions in the handover package. State who records observations and who can authorise a return to service after moisture is found.

Coordinate that package with the local approval process. The Malaysia BESS safety guide is a useful starting point for the broader project discussion, but environmental suitability remains configuration- and site-specific.

The final review should answer a straightforward question: if the cabinet is shut down, serviced in humid weather and restarted, does the team know which conditions to check and which evidence permits operation? If not, the commissioning plan is incomplete even when its rain-ingress documentation is in order.
