A battery disconnect is an important component, but its handle position does not answer every protection question. Buyers must distinguish carrying normal current, switching an allowed load, interrupting a fault and establishing a safe maintenance boundary. These are different duties, supported by different ratings and procedures.

For battery DC isolation, buy the complete protection arrangement rather than an impressive-looking switch. The designer needs the battery fault data, converter topology, conductor details and approved operating states. Installation, fault assessment and verification belong to qualified personnel. This article explains the documents to request; it does not provide an energised switching or repair procedure.

Put each component’s duty in writing

The current IEC catalogue includes IEC 60947-3:2020+AMD1:2025, covering switches, disconnectors, switch-disconnectors and fuse-combination units within its published voltage scope. Its title is a reminder that these device categories are not interchangeable. A reference to this standard is not proof that any particular product meets the required DC duty or has been certified for the project.

A purchase specification should identify the exact device, its DC ratings, the manufacturer’s approved connection arrangement and the function it performs in the system. Where performance depends on an upstream protective device, obtain the tested or declared combination information. Do not use an AC rating as evidence of DC interruption capability.

A current limit is not an interrupting rating

The BMS may reduce allowable discharge, command a contactor or stop normal operation. That does not establish that the complete circuit can clear every prospective short circuit. Keep the operating current limit separate from the fault-current assessment and from the interruption capabilities of the protective devices.

Omówienie uziemienia w DC wiring and fuse-selection guide distinguishes fuse current rating from interrupt rating for lithium systems. Use that distinction when reviewing a quotation, but obtain the rating and selection evidence for the actual equipment rather than copying an example fuse from another manufacturer’s installation.

This matters even when discussing a wall-mounted LiFePO4 battery. Low nominal system voltage does not make a high-current short circuit harmless. The protection assessment must cover the available sources, conductors, connections and the relevant equipment, rather than treating a residential product as exempt from engineering review.

Map the sources on both sides of an open device

A useful single-line diagram shows more than the battery and inverter. It identifies parallel branches, common DC buses, charging sources, converter energy storage and the location of every protective device. Ask which parts remain energised when the proposed isolation device opens. An isolated output does not remove the energy stored inside the battery.

Littelfuse’s 2024 BESS fuse engineering paper discusses protection at module, rack, DC panel and converter levels, including contribution from parallel battery racks. The procurement lesson is to assess faults at their actual locations. One advertised rack fault figure is not automatically the right value for every device on a shared bus.

For a commercial battery storage system, require the supplier and site designer to agree where the cabinet’s internal protection responsibility ends. External cables, combiners and site-installed equipment must have an identified design owner. A boundary omitted from both contracts is not protected by a statement that the cabinet is “fully integrated.”

Changing the number of parallel branches, cable lengths or converter arrangement may change the protection assessment. Treat an expansion as an engineering change, not simply an energy-capacity addition. Preserve the original assessment and request the revision that covers the final configuration.

Ask for the protection evidence before shipment

The technical file should make it possible to trace a selected device back to its design duty. Ask for the fault assessment assumptions, the relevant time-current and energy-limiting information, coordination evidence and the conditions under which ratings apply. Proprietary details may require controlled disclosure, but confidentiality is not a substitute for sufficient design evidence.

Check the actual installed part numbers against that file. A substituted fuse, contactor or switch can invalidate an assessed combination even if its normal current rating looks similar. Require an approval process for substitutions, including confirmation from the responsible designer and manufacturer where necessary.

Handover must explain the isolation boundary

The owner needs an approved, site-specific procedure identifying energy sources, isolation points, lockout responsibilities and verification requirements. It must address stored energy and the manufacturer’s restrictions. A battery maintenance boundary should never be inferred from the last command sent by a remote service engineer.

Include those responsibilities in the BESS procurement and acceptance package. Ask who updates the drawings after a component replacement and who authorises return to service. Keep the correct replacement-device list with the maintenance records.

The strongest quotation is not the one with the largest disconnect rating in isolation. It is the one that explains the complete fault and maintenance boundaries, names the exact protective equipment and supplies evidence for the delivered configuration. That makes the system easier to approve, service and expand without losing control of its protection design.
