Meizhou Bus Station Off-Grid PV-Storage-Charging Project

1. Project Overview

  • Background: Responds to the “Dual Carbon” strategy and urban green transportation goals, demonstrating a practical path to decarbonised public transport infrastructure.
  • Configuration: 625kW PV array plus 1MWh energy storage system, upgraded from existing PV infrastructure to create a fully integrated solar-storage-charging station.
  • Core Model: “PV generation → energy storage → nighttime bus charging” closed loop, delivering 100% off-grid power for the bus depot.

2. Core Transformations

  • Energy Attribute: From “grid-dependent power sales” to “100% self-consumption”, solving peak-valley price arbitrage and grid-load constraints at the same time.
  • Scenario Adaptation: Matches the buses’ “day operation, night charging” pattern through time-shifted energy supply, eliminating reliance on municipal power for charging.
  • Benefits: From a single economic benefit to a triple value of ecology, economy and operational resilience for the public transport operator.

3. Technical Advantages

  • Stability: PV-storage synergy eliminates PV intermittency and provides 24-hour reliable power. Meizhou’s >1,100 annual effective generation hours ensure consistent energy yield.
  • Low-Carbon: Annual output of ~780,000kWh saves 234 tonnes of standard coal and cuts 640 tonnes of CO2 emissions, equivalent to planting about 35,000 trees.
  • Economy: O&M cost is roughly one-fifth of diesel generation. Annual savings exceed 500,000 CNY with an estimated static payback of 6–8 years.
  • Flexibility: PV modules use idle roof and shelter space; the modular storage design is expandable and highly replicable across other bus depots and transport hubs.
